Developing Our Relationship With A Higher Power: What Does It Really Mean?

We are all born intuitively knowing that we part of something much larger than ourselves. We felt it long ago cradled in our mother’s womb during the gestation period. We felt it the moment we took our first breath born into a vast new world. And we feel it now as a faint but ever-present echo calling out through our ethereal amnesia. As we know, life presents us with a variety of experiences. And these experiences offer us continuous opportunities to nurture this connection. Yet even when we do hold the awareness and feel this bond to something beyond us, it’s still easy to struggle as its always in a state of flux.

But just like any other relationship, developing this connection takes work. But who or what is this higher power we look to? How can this connection be strong at one point in time only to fade or become overshadowed at another? And why is it that when we find ourselves facing hardships we feel the most alone and bereft in our darkest hour?

It wasn’t until many years into my spiritual journey that I got those answers. And ultimately, what I discovered, was that if we are created by a higher power, then we are that higher power. And if we are that higher power, than that higher power is also us. Therefore, developing our relationship to a higher power is about developing a relationship with ourselves.

This changes everything. We are free; no longer afraid of being punished by an unknown force. We are empowered; no more pining after something ‘out there’ hoping it tells us how to live life ‘down here.’ And held, knowing that without a doubt we are supported in the grandest way.

Our relationship to Spirit only suffers when our relationship with ourselves suffers. We feel that isolation when we turn away from our truth. When we let others overstep boundaries we have set. And when we ignore our intuition. Turning our attention inward, especially when faced with decisions and in the face of adversity, we need to make it a habit of asking, what am I feeling right now? What is my intuition telling me? Is fear or love driving this decision? And how could self-love be expressed right now? These are the questions that keep our relationship with Spirit strong because they keep our relationship with ourselves strong.

Spirit isn’t beyond us waiting for our call. Spirit resides within us and is ever present. Even though we are not All That Is; or God in its totality, we carry all the same characteristics of Godhood within us because it is our divine heritage. Meeting ourselves where we are and knowing Spirit is always guiding us; for we are always guiding us, is developing this relationship. For wisdom comes as a gentle whisper from within rather than a shout echoing from the mountain top beyond us.
